Chakalaka is one of South Africa’s signature dishes that I enjoy.

Honestly, it has saved me on so many nights where I had last minute guests coming over and I had no intentions to cook.

The beauty of it is that it can be paired with absolutely anything besides braaid meat. It can be one of your seven colours on a Sunday.

It’s no secret that 3 people could bring to the table 3 different types of chakalaka and still serve it’s purpose.

With that been said let me let you in on my chakalaka recipe.

Ingredients:

Carrots

Green, red & yellow pepper

Garlic clove

Onion

Baked beans

Cucumber

Sweet Corn

Pickled Atchar

Salt

Black Pepper

Curry powder

Chillies(optional)

Oil

Method:

1. Oil your pan and pre-heat at low heat.

2. Chop peppers, garlic and onions, fry them till they’re well-done. (If you want your chakalaka hot this is the step you include a chopped chillie and fry it with the other contents)

3. Grate carrots and add them to the well done peppers, onion & garlic.

4. Season with curry powder, salt&pepper

5. Once the carrot is done. Turn the heat off and add baked beans & sweet corn (cooked or from a tin) to the simmering pot.

6. Let the chakalaka sit to cool down.

9. Once it’s cool add the pickled atchar.

10. Dice the cucumber and add it to the cool chakalaka.

11. BON APETITE!!!
